The hereditary trade of carpet weaving is passed down from generations by families
who operate family run businesses.

The rulers of Amber-Jaipur took a great interest in carpets and built up a large

emperor Akbar even established a carpet weaving factory in Jaipur.
In the mid of 19th century, the Carpet industry was started in Jaipur, when carpet-making
was introduced as a jail craft.
These carpets manufactured in Jaipur include floor coverings made up of small mats

a large number of different shaped carpets for spreading in his garden at Amber,
which were mostly as the designs used in palaces of the Red fort, Delhi and the
Taj Mahal, Agra. Some of the fine pieces of Mugal Carpets are still present at the
central Museum and the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum, Jaipur.
Rajasthani Carpets

Modern Rajasthani carpets follow north's Persian design. Often dictated by the buyer's
tastes, such designs frequently incorporate hunting scenes or romantic scenes or
romantic themes from Persian poetry.
Durries or Cotton carpets
Durries or cotton carpets are another of the popular product from Jaipur. A Durree
is a cool, light rug, which is closely hand-woven with geometric patterns and repeating
colors. Jaipur's durries are smooth and light shaded. Durries are lighter and easier
to maintain and can be washed easily at home. They are suitable for a hot and dusty
environment as in Rajasthan. Durries are less expensive and even long lasting.
Durries come in numerous designs although the most common are stripes of different
colors and geometrical designs. Animal and bird pattern are also used in durries.
